5 -grades o degrees?-
Nota d'usoPer indicare la temperatura si usa il sostantivo degree, non grade: Today's temperature is 20 degrees, oggi c'è una temperatura di 20 gradi. Inoltre, quando si parla di gradi, si usa il verbo al singolare, perché il soggetto è sempre la temperatura: It was 30 degrees yesterday, ieri c'erano 30 gradi (non There were 30 degrees yesterday). La parola grade possiede molti significati, che hanno comunque a che fare con una scala di riferimento (qualità, voti, classi della scuola): low grade tea, tè di bassa qualità; He always gets good grades, prende sempre dei buoni voti. -
6 -medium o average?-
Nota d'usoQuando si parla di medie statistiche, il termine corretto da usare in inglese è average, non medium: L'età media delle donne è molto bassa, the average age of the women is very low (non the medium age of the women is very low). Medium significa medio in molti altri contesti, ma in questo caso sarebbe fuorviante. -
